Weapons, Craftsmanship, Design and the Hidden Engineering Heritage of Kerala

Kalaripayattu is one of Kerala’s most distinctive martial traditions. Its training integrates physical conditioning, movement, weapon skills, discipline and, in later descriptions, connections with healing and yogic practices. The training traditionally progresses through stages such as Meythari, Kolthari, Angathari and Verumkai.

Yet the history of Kalaripayattu is usually narrated from the perspective of the warrior and the Gurukkal. Far less attention is given to another figure who was indispensable to the martial tradition:

the craftsman who created the weapon.

A sword does not appear in a warrior’s hand by itself. A spear requires a carefully formed head and shaft. A shield requires structural understanding. An urumi requires sophisticated knowledge of metal and flexibility. Even the distinctive wooden Otta requires the selection and shaping of an appropriate piece of wood.

This raises an important historical question:

Who possessed and transmitted the technical knowledge required to design, manufacture and maintain these weapons?

It is in this question that the Viśvakarma–Manu craft tradition deserves closer examination.


Viśvakarma and the Manu Tradition

Within Viśvakarma traditions, Manu occupies an important place in ancestral and craft lineages. The Viśvakarma tradition associates its ancestral heritage with knowledge of construction, craftsmanship, metallurgy, woodworking and other specialised technical arts.

For the purposes of heritage research, however, an important distinction must be maintained.

The traditional genealogical claim that the Manu lineage represents a particular Kshatriya lineage is a subject that requires independent historical and textual examination. It should not simply be presented as an established fact without sources.

What can be investigated more concretely is the relationship between the traditional artisan lineages and the technologies that produced weapons.

That question is particularly relevant to Kalaripayattu.


The Weapon Before the Warrior

Kerala Tourism describes Angathari as the stage in which students are trained in sharp weapons including the sword and shield, spear, dagger and urumi.

These weapons are not arbitrary objects.

Their:

  • length,
  • weight,
  • thickness,
  • balance,
  • flexibility,
  • curvature,
  • grip,
  • material,
  • edge geometry

all influence how they can be used.

Therefore, the history of a martial weapon is not only a history of combat.

It is also a history of design and technology.

The person who understood how to make the weapon suitable for its intended function possessed knowledge that today we would describe using terms such as materials knowledge, functional design, ergonomics, balance and manufacturing technology.

This is precisely the area in which the history of traditional Viśvakarma craftsmanship becomes significant.


Otta: Where Weapon Design Meets Martial Technique

One of the most fascinating examples is the Otta.

Otta is a specially shaped wooden weapon used in the advanced form of Kolthari known as Ottappayattu. Kerala Tourism describes it as a rounded and curved weapon, traditionally fashioned from the curved branches of the tamarind tree.

But the importance of Otta is not merely that it is a weapon.

Its distinctive shape is directly associated with distinctive movements.

Ottappayattu involves oral instructions from the Gurukkal and allows considerable improvisation. Unconventional techniques are described as Kalla Kolukal and Kalla Chuvadukal.

Here we encounter a remarkable principle:

Weapon design → movement → technique → body mechanics.

The shape of the weapon influences how it is held, moved and employed.

That means the history of Otta should not be studied only as martial history. It should also be studied as craft history.

Who understood the appropriate wood?

Who selected the natural curve?

Who determined the dimensions?

Who shaped and finished the weapon?

How was the knowledge transmitted?

And did particular artisan families preserve this knowledge?

These are legitimate historical questions.


The Sword: Balance as Technology

The sword occupies a central position within Angathari. Vaal Payattu trains the practitioner in cutting and thrusting, while shield work involves defensive movements combined with twists and turns of the body.

For such a weapon, balance is crucial.

A sword cannot simply be a piece of metal sharpened on one side. Its effectiveness depends upon the relationship between the blade, handle, weight distribution and the movements of the practitioner.

This is where the craftsman becomes as important to the history of the weapon as the warrior.

The warrior develops the technique.

The craftsman develops the instrument through which that technique becomes possible.

The two forms of knowledge therefore exist in a relationship:

the technology of the weapon and the technology of the body.


Urumi: Metallurgy and Martial Science

The Urumi provides an even stronger example.

Kerala Tourism describes the urumi as a long, narrow, double-edged and highly flexible sword-like weapon. Its length can be customised according to the user's body and convenience. Its blade is produced by joining and compressing iron foils to obtain strength, durability and flexibility.

This is extraordinary from a technological perspective.

The craftsman must understand the material.

The weapon must possess flexibility without losing functional strength.

Its dimensions must suit the user.

And the practitioner must learn to control a blade that can coil and turn rapidly during movement.

Thus the urumi represents an intersection of:

metallurgy + design + measurement + body mechanics + martial training.

It is therefore reasonable to investigate whether Kerala's traditional metalworking communities preserved specialised knowledge relevant to such weapons.

That investigation is especially important when studying the historical contribution of Viśvakarma craft traditions.


Spear and Shield: Functional Engineering in Traditional Weapons

The same principle appears in the spear and shield.

Kerala Tourism describes Kuntham Payattu as training in the use of the spear's sharp end for thrusting and its shaft for striking and defence. Shields were made using materials including metals, woven cane and sometimes wood covered with leather; their projections helped absorb impact and prevent an opponent's weapon from slipping sideways.

This is more than ornamentation.

It demonstrates functional design.

The form of the object is determined partly by what it is required to do.

This is exactly the kind of practical technological knowledge that traditional craft communities preserved through apprenticeship and experience.


The Viśvakarma Question

This leads us to the central proposition of this article.

The claim is not that existing historical evidence has already established that every Kalaripayattu weapon was made exclusively by Viśvakarma craftsmen.

That claim requires weapon-by-weapon documentary evidence.

The more important proposition is this:

The contribution of Viśvakarma craft lineages to Kalaripayattu should be investigated through the history of weapon manufacture, materials, design, metalworking and woodworking—not merely through the list of Kalaripayattu warriors or Gurukkals.

This changes the question completely.

Instead of asking only:

“Who fought with the weapon?”

we also ask:

“Who designed and manufactured it?”

Instead of asking only:

“Who taught the technique?”

we ask:

“What technical knowledge made that technique possible?”

And instead of looking only at the battlefield, we look toward the forge and workshop.


The Blacksmith and the Martial Tradition

Traditional blacksmithing was a highly specialised craft.

The smith had to understand fire, temperature, metal behaviour, forging, shaping, hardening, sharpening and finishing.

When the object being produced was a weapon, the consequences of poor workmanship could be fatal.

The weapon had to survive impact.

Its edge had to remain functional.

Its weight had to be appropriate.

Its grip had to be secure.

Its balance had to suit movement.

This is not merely manual labour.

It is accumulated technical knowledge.

The historical relationship between Kerala's traditional smithing communities and Viśvakarma identity therefore deserves systematic research.

At the same time, historical scholarship must avoid assuming that every blacksmith in every period belonged to one single social category. Different regions and periods had different occupational and social structures.

Therefore, the evidence must come from:

family records, inscriptions, manuscripts, oral traditions, royal armoury records, surviving weapons, workshop traditions and ethnographic documentation.


From Craftsmanship to Engineering

One of the most important arguments of this heritage study is that traditional craftsmanship should not automatically be treated as primitive technology.

Consider what is required to create a functional sword:

Measurement → proportion → material selection → shaping → balance → edge formation → grip → testing.

The same logic appears in the construction of other weapons.

In modern terminology, several of these principles resemble engineering design.

The traditional craftsman may not have used the modern word engineering, but the underlying process could involve sophisticated empirical knowledge.

Therefore, when we speak of the Viśvakarma tradition, we should not look only at the finished weapon.

We should look at the knowledge system behind the weapon.


Manu, Craft and the Warrior Tradition

The Viśvakarma Manu tradition provides an important cultural framework through which this technological heritage can be studied.

Within traditional Viśvakarma narratives, Manu is remembered as an ancestral figure associated with the craft tradition.

If future research establishes documentary links between Manu-lineage artisan families and the manufacture of Kerala's martial weapons, it would add an important dimension to the history of Kalaripayattu.

But this must be demonstrated rather than assumed.

The strongest historical argument will therefore come not from repeating a genealogical claim, but from bringing together material evidence and lineage evidence.

A surviving sword.

A traditional forging technique.

A documented artisan family.

An old workshop tradition.

A manuscript describing manufacture.

A royal record identifying a weaponsmith.

A family genealogy preserving the craft.

Together, such evidence could reconstruct a history that has largely disappeared from mainstream narratives.


The Forgotten Engineer

The warrior is remembered because he fought.

The Gurukkal is remembered because he taught.

But the craftsman may disappear from history because he stood behind the forge.

Yet without him:

there is no sword.

Without the sword:

there is no sword technique.

Without the appropriate weapon:

the specialised movement associated with that weapon cannot develop in the same form.

This creates a chain:

Craft knowledge → Weapon design → Weapon manufacture → Martial technique → Warrior training

The Viśvakarma contribution, if demonstrated through historical research, belongs somewhere within this chain.

That is why the artisan should not be treated as a peripheral figure in the history of Kalaripayattu.


A Heritage Research Proposition

The purpose of this article is therefore not to replace one simplified history with another.

It is to open a neglected field of research.

Kalaripayattu already has a documented weapon tradition involving wooden weapons, swords, shields, spears, daggers and urumi.

The next step is to investigate the people and technical traditions behind those weapons.

A serious research project should examine:

  1. Traditional weapon-making families of Kerala.
  2. Viśvakarma family genealogies connected with metalworking.
  3. Historical blacksmith workshops and armouries.
  4. Surviving traditional swords, spears and urumis.
  5. The metallurgy and manufacturing techniques used in their production.
  6. The relationship between weapon dimensions and martial techniques.
  7. Oral histories preserved by artisan families.
  8. Temple, palace and local chieftain records concerning weaponsmiths.
  9. Manuscripts dealing with Śilpaśāstra, metallurgy and weapon construction.
  10. Regional variations in the relationship between Kalaripayattu schools and artisan communities.

Only such multidisciplinary research can establish the historical extent of the Viśvakarma contribution.


Conclusion

Kalaripayattu is not merely a history of combat.

It is also a history of craftsmanship, materials, design, movement and human engineering.

The Otta demonstrates how a distinctive weapon form can be integrated with a distinctive system of movement. The sword demonstrates the importance of balance and proportion. The spear and shield demonstrate functional design. The urumi demonstrates sophisticated knowledge of flexibility, metal and controlled movement.

These weapons were not created by nature.

They were shaped by human knowledge.

And behind that knowledge stood generations of craftsmen.

The Viśvakarma–Manu tradition, with its strong cultural association with craftsmanship and technical knowledge, therefore deserves a serious place in the study of Kerala's technological and martial heritage.

The question is not simply:

Who wielded the sword?

The deeper question is:

Who understood the sword well enough to create it?

And perhaps the most important question of all is:

How much of the knowledge preserved by Kerala's traditional artisan lineages has disappeared from the written history of Kalaripayattu?

That is the history that remains to be recovered.

**The warrior carried the weapon.

The Gurukkal taught its use.
But somewhere behind the forge stood the craftsman who gave the weapon its form.**

That forgotten craftsman deserves a place in the history of Kalaripayattu.
