Sudakshina — Queen of the Raghu Dynasty

Sudakshina — Queen of the Raghu Dynasty Sudakshina is a notable queen in the ancient Indian literary tradition. She appears in Kalidasa’s Raghuvamsha as the wife of King Dilipa, a ruler of the Ikshvaku–Raghu dynasty traditionally associated with the Solar Dynasty (Suryavamsha). King Dilipa and Queen Sudakshina are portrayed as a devoted royal couple committed to dharma and their responsibilities as rulers. One of the central concerns of their life was the absence of a child to continue their royal lineage. Seeking a solution, Dilipa approached the sage Vasistha. The sage instructed him to serve and protect Nandini, the sacred divine cow associated with Vasistha’s hermitage. Dilipa accepted the duty, and Sudakshina shared in this sacred undertaking. Sudakshina’s character is significant because she is portrayed not merely as a royal consort, but as a supportive partner in her husband’s religious and familial responsibilities. Her story reflects themes of devotion, patience, duty, f...

CHAPTER 13 — BEHIND THE SHADOW

It was 2:17 a.m.

The city was asleep.

Rain was falling heavily.

Far away from Mumbai, in an old three-storey building, one room on the top floor was still lit.

A man was sitting alone inside.

A few files lay before him.

A mobile phone.

An old diary.

And a half-filled glass of water on the corner of the table.

Every few minutes, he looked at his phone.

As if he was waiting for someone.

But the phone never rang.

The silence inside the room grew heavier.

Outside, there was only the sound of rain.

The man finally stood up and walked towards the window.

Below him, the city was almost empty.

Wet roads.

Faint headlights.

Distant sounds of vehicles.

He stood there for a few moments, staring outside.

Then—

TAP.

He turned around.

Nothing.

He slowly looked back towards the window.

A few seconds passed.

Then—

TAP... TAP.

This time, the sound came from the door.

He walked towards it.

“Who is it?”

No answer.

He opened the door.

The corridor was empty.

There was nobody there.

He stood outside for a moment, looking down the corridor.

Nothing.

Slowly, he turned back towards his room.

Just before he closed the door, something caught his eye.

At the far end of the corridor...

Something moved.

A person?

A shadow?

He couldn't tell.

He stared at it.

A few seconds later, there was nothing there.

The corridor was empty again.

He closed the door.

But the calmness on his face was gone.

He walked back to the table.

Closed the files.

Picked up his phone.

Dialled a number.

The phone rang.

No one answered.

He called again.

Still nothing.

He placed the phone back on the table.

At that exact moment, the light above him flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then—

Everything went dark.

The room disappeared into complete darkness.

He tried to say something.

But no words came out.

A sudden sound came from inside the room.

Something fell.

A glass shattered.

Then...

Silence.

Complete silence.

---

The next morning, people had gathered outside the same building.

Police vehicles arrived.

Officers moved quickly through the entrance.

People stood outside, whispering among themselves.

“What happened last night?”

“No one knows.”

“Where was he?”

“What about his phone?”

“The phone is still inside.”

An officer entered the room and began checking the table.

The files contained nothing immediately useful.

The phone was still there.

The diary was still there.

But something else caught his attention.

A small piece of paper lying beside the files.

There was only one word written on it.

RANA.

The officer stared at the word for several seconds.

He said nothing.

He slowly folded the paper and placed it in his pocket.

Who had written that name?

Why?

Who had entered the room that night?

Nobody knew.

But one thing had changed.

Something had begun.

Not merely in that room.

Not merely in that city.

A story had begun that would eventually stretch across cities, borders and criminal networks.

And its first trace...

was a single word written on a small piece of paper.

RANA.

Where would that name appear next?

Nobody knew.

CHAPTER 14— DHANRAJ

Who was Dhanraj?

He was not merely a name that disappeared inside a room the previous night.

His name had been heard in political corridors, business circles, and the darker networks of the criminal world.

He was not an ordinary politician.

He was more interested in controlling power than standing directly in front of it.

Winning an election was never enough for Dhanraj.

Who listened to that leader?

Who stood beside him?

Who opposed him?

Who needed money?

Who needed protection?

Dhanraj knew all of it.

That was his greatest strength.

---

During the years of his rise, the politics of the region was divided among several powerful groups.

Old rivalries and social tensions that had existed for years slowly found their way into politics.

At first, individuals competed against each other.

Then they became organizations.

And eventually, those organizations became vote banks.

That was where Dhanraj's real rise began.

He did not become the leader of one particular group.

Instead, he became a man who could reach every side.

He could sit with one leader in the morning.

And meet that leader's opponent in the evening.

Even when those two men were enemies, Dhanraj maintained relationships with both.

His political rule was simple:

“Before you destroy your enemy, find out who is giving him strength.”

He did not always attack his opponents directly.

First, he would approach the people around them.

A job for one.

Financial assistance for another.

Political protection for someone else.

A business contract for another.

Slowly, the circle around a powerful leader would begin to change.

People who once stood beside that leader would start moving towards Dhanraj.

Eventually, the leader would find himself isolated.

That was when Dhanraj would step forward.

---

His greatest ability was not simply buying people.

It was making people believe that standing with Dhanraj was in their own interest.

He did not offer only money.

He offered power.

His people gained influence in their local areas.

They received protection when problems arose.

They received opportunities in politics.

And slowly, a huge network formed around Dhanraj.

Politicians.

Businessmen.

Local leaders.

People from the criminal underworld.

Small gangs.

They all stood with him for different reasons.

But behind all of them was the same thing.

Dhanraj's influence.

---

As the years passed, Dhanraj became more than a political force.

He became a power broker.

Who should be promoted during an election?

Who should be strengthened in a particular area?

Who should form an alliance?

Who should be kept at a distance?

Which conflict should be stopped?

And which conflict should be allowed to continue?

Dhanraj's influence reached into all of it.

But there was one problem.

The old rivalries in the region had never completely disappeared.

The political competition between the Brahmin and Kshatriya blocs still existed in many places.

Dhanraj did not try to completely destroy that conflict.

He tried to control it.

That was his strategy.

When one side became too powerful, he supported the other.

When both sides began fighting, Dhanraj would step between them in the name of negotiation.

Eventually, both sides would need him.

And slowly...

Dhanraj became the centre of that entire political system.

---

From the outside, he might have looked like a powerful political leader.

But those who knew him closely understood something else.

Dhanraj was not merely playing politics.

He was playing people.

Every person had a value.

Every relationship had a purpose.

Every enemy had a weakness.

What he had built over the years was not merely a political empire.

It was a network.

A network so large that defeating one man would never be enough to bring it down.

That was why...

when the news of Dhanraj's death spread, many people were shocked.

They did not see merely the death of a man.

They saw one of the pillars of a much larger system collapsing.

But how had that pillar fallen?

Who was behind it?

And what was hidden in Dhanraj's past that had finally led him to his death?

Those answers...

were still waiting to be uncovered.
