Live Like Indra: Build Your Life Before Seeking Spirituality

Why do we say that a person should live like Indra?

For a human being living in the material world, wealth matters. Security matters. Freedom matters. Power, prosperity, social status, and the ability to protect and provide for one’s family all matter.

Indra can be understood as a symbol of strength, prosperity, victory, sovereignty, and protection. Therefore, “living like Indra” does not simply mean pursuing luxury. It can mean building strength, creating wealth, achieving independence, and becoming capable of protecting and supporting others.

A person should first learn to build his or her life.

Gain knowledge.
Build a career.
Create wealth.
Develop strength and confidence.
Take care of the family.
Earn respect through achievement.
Contribute to society.

Only after building a strong foundation should one choose to explore deeper questions about spirituality and the meaning of life.

When Spirituality Becomes a Business

There is another issue that needs to be questioned.

Spirituality should be a genuine search for truth and self-understanding. But spirituality can also be misused—for money, influence, fear, control, or blind obedience.

When people are repeatedly told that “material success is meaningless and spirituality is everything,” while those preaching the message themselves accumulate wealth and influence through spirituality, we should have the courage to question it.

Poverty should not automatically be glorified.

Ambition should not automatically be condemned.

Wealth should not automatically be treated as a sin.

A person who wants to improve his life, build a business, create employment, become financially independent, and provide a better future for his family should not be made to feel guilty for pursuing those goals.

True spirituality should not make a person weak or dependent.

It should make a person wiser, more independent, more responsible, and more capable of distinguishing truth from manipulation.

Build First, Then Seek

My view is simple:

Build your life before running away from the world.

Create wealth.
Gain knowledge.
Develop strength.
Achieve independence.
Support your family.
Build something meaningful.
Contribute to society.

Then, if you feel the need to explore spirituality, explore it.

At that point, spirituality becomes a choice, not an escape.

There is a difference between turning to spirituality because one has given up on life and turning to spirituality after experiencing success, responsibility, achievement, and the realities of the material world.

Therefore, the message to young people should not be:

“Reject the material world. Spirituality is everything.”

Instead, it can be:

“Build yourself. Stand on your own feet. Create wealth. Gain knowledge and strength. Become independent. Then, if you want to understand the deeper meaning of life, seek spirituality.”

Spirituality should elevate human beings—not destroy their ambition, confidence, abilities, or dreams.

Build first. Achieve first. Become capable first. Then seek deeper meaning—not because you failed in the material world, but because you have experienced it and are ready to look beyond it.
