Sukanya — The Princess Who Chose Chyavana

Sukanya — The Princess Who Chose Chyavana

Among the women of ancient Indian tradition, Sukanya holds a distinctive place. She was the daughter of King Sharyati, and her story brings together royalty, an unexpected mistake, marriage, devotion, and the extraordinary intervention of the Ashvin Kumaras.

Daughter of King Sharyati

Sukanya was the daughter of King Sharyati. Born into a royal family, she grew up as an intelligent and graceful young woman.

One day, King Sharyati travelled into a forest with his family and attendants.

In that forest lived the great sage Chyavana, who had been performing severe penance for a very long period.

Because he had remained motionless for years, his body had become covered by an anthill and earth. Only parts of his body, including his eyes, could be seen.

Sukanya's Curiosity

While walking through the forest, Sukanya noticed two shining points within the anthill.

Curious about what they were, she touched them with a small thorn.

They were the eyes of Chyavana.

The sage suffered great pain and lost his sight. As a consequence, King Sharyati and his entire group experienced unexpected difficulties.

When the king understood what had happened, he approached the sage and asked for forgiveness.

Sukanya's Decision

Sukanya accepted responsibility for what she had done.

Chyavana was an elderly sage devoted to austerity. Yet Sukanya did not attempt to escape from the consequences of her actions.

She chose to marry Chyavana.

The princess therefore left behind the comforts of royal life and entered the life of an ashrama.

The Arrival of the Ashvin Kumaras

As time passed, the divine physicians known as the Ashvin Kumaras came to Chyavana's hermitage.

They were impressed by Sukanya's beauty and asked her to choose one of them instead of remaining with the aged sage.

Sukanya, however, remained firm in her devotion to Chyavana.

With the assistance of the Ashvin Kumaras, Chyavana underwent a transformation.

Three men of identical appearance then appeared before Sukanya.

She was asked to identify her husband.

Sukanya recognized Chyavana.

As a result, Chyavana regained his youth and beauty.

The Legacy of Sukanya

The story of Sukanya is more than the story of a princess and her marriage.

Three qualities stand out in her story:

Responsibility — She accepted responsibility for her mistake.

Devotion — She remained committed to the decision she had made.

Confidence — When faced with the final test, she recognized her husband without abandoning her conviction.

For these reasons, Sukanya remains a memorable female figure in the traditional literature of India.

Her story is that of a princess who left behind royal comfort and entered the life of a great sage — and remained steadfast through every test.
